 The Dark Knight
Synopsis: The mysterious Joker has appeared, and it’s up to Batman, Commissioner Gordon and Harvey Dent to save Gotham City from the psychopathic mind of this sinister new villain. This is easily the best film from 2008. This film is full of plot twists and amazing technology, as well as a stunning performance from the late Heath Ledger as The Joker.

Synopsis: The dim but lovable Forrest Gump finds himself accidentally present at some of the most historic events in American history, but the love of his live, Jenny, still eludes him. A beautiful and memorable fable about a man who ends up being at many famous American events, despite his IQ of 69. Forrest Gump has many legendary characters, but the star of the show is definitely Tom Hanks, who plays the role of Forrest to perfection.

Synopsis: Two imprisoned men form a strong friendship over their time inside, and find a new purpose in life... Based on a short story by Stephen King, this is one of the greatest book-to-film adaptations of all time. With one of the most tear-jerking endings known to movies, this makes a great film to watch with your family.

 Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
Synopsis: Young Luke Skywalker begins his Jedi training and learns to use force, whilst Darth Vader attempts to rid the galaxy of the “rebels”. Star Wars is one the most famous series of movie making history. This is the first, and arguably the best of George Lucas’ creations. If you don’t understand the Star Wars phenomenon, this is a great place to start.

 Amelie
Synopsis: Amelie, a young Parisian girl, finds a new aim in life by helping others, and by so doing finds love herself. A typically romantic French film, this won best film at the European Film awards, and best foreign film at the Oscars, to name a few. It is a great film to watch with your friends and girl/boy friend.

Synopsis: When the newest addition to a boy’s toy collection arrives, the old favourite Woody feels threatened and decides to take action. Although many consider this a bit childish, Toy Story is a great movie for people of all ages. It still remains a classic family film today, and is a testament to the talent of Pixar.

 The Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Synopsis: The Terminator’s back, but this time his aim is to save John Connor from an advanced cyborg killer. One of the few sequels that is better than the original. Terminator 2 features Arnold Schwarzenegger at his best, playing the cool as ice Terminator; this is a must see for science fiction fans.

Synopsis: Computer hacker Thomas Anderson is approached by a group of mysterious rebels and soon discovers that life isn’t what it seems. The Matrix gives a disturbing view on futuristic life, which will have you questioning your own existence because of this. It was a huge commercial success, bringing science fiction films to a wider audience.

 Back to the Future
Synopsis: It’s 1985, and Marty McFly discovers his own life is in danger, and the only way to save it is to go back to 1955 with the help of the wacky Doc Brown and his time machine. This is a timeless classic which spawned two successful sequels. Back to the Future features the brilliant Christopher Lloyd, who plays madcap scientist Doc Brown, and is still extremely enjoyable today, especially with older relatives.

A visually stunning adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's epic fantasy novel. The Fellowship of the Ring is the first volume of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the following two volumes were also adapted as film sequels. This film introduces the main characters, including Frodo Baggins, Gandalf the wizard, Samwise Gamgee, Aragorn and Gollum.
