Children and Young People's Plan
What do young people want?
What do you feel is important for young people in Kingston? What ideas can you share to improve the lives of young people in the borough?
This is a chance to voice what you think of life in Kingston and to take part in decisions that affect your lives.
Every four years, the Council and its partners – voluntary groups, schools, Police and others – write a Children and Young People’s Plan. It’s an ambitious action plan which sets out common goals for the future, to improve life in Kingston for young people.
This time, they’re looking at the Children and Young People’s Plan for 2014-2018 and they want to hear your opinion on what is important for young people, and your ideas on what improvements could be made in Kingston.
We’ve been working with a group of young people who have volunteered to go into Kingston classrooms and ask their peers what they believe needs to be done. Below is a timeline with some details of what we have done so far and where we are going:

TIMELINE |
|---|---|
25 January 2011FIRST GROUP MEETING!The group met to figure out how they could consult young people in the borough. They decided to create a questionnaire which would be rolled out in schools across Kingston asking young people directly what issues they believe are important and what improvements could be made to existing services. They decided to produce a short film presentation to show in schools to explain what the consultation is all about. |
9 March 2011WHAT ISSUES ARE IMPORTANT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE?The group met for a second time, to work together and figure out what issues are important for young people living in Kingston. These included: |
12 March 2011LOOK WHO’S TALKING!The group took part in the first of two training sessions on presentation skills – this helped them prepare for their presentation in the schools coming up in May… |
15 March 2011HOW WOULD YOU SPEND £10MILLION ON SERVICES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE?The group met with Duncan Clark, the Director of Learning and Children’s Services, to get some background information on why the consultation is taking place. Local authorities now have more control over how their money is spent – Kingston wants to know more about what young people think, before making plans about services for 2014-2018. |
19 March 2011TRAINING WEEKEND…The group came for a second training where they had to practice different styles of presentation – powerpoint, flashcards, role play…. |
25 March 2011SCHOOL COUNCILAt the School Council, held at Coombe Boys, students were asked to identify five main themes which they believed are the most important for young people in Kingston. The main issues identified were crime, safety, sexual health, money and physical health. In small groups, they were asked to discuss why these issues were important and what changes could be made to improve existing services. |
18/19 April 2011‘REEL’ FUN AT THE FILM SESSION…Some of the group members volunteered to meet over Easter to write, storyboard and film a short presentation, explaining what the Children and Young People’s Plan is and why the consultation is taking place… The video will be uploaded at yuonline.co.uk soon! |
3 May 2011Final preparations….The panel meets once more before going in their schools to show the film and roll out the questionnaire. |
Beginning of MayTime to roll out the consultation!Over the first two weeks of May, the group members are going to show their film and present the questionnaire to their peers in schools across Kingston. Time to put all their hard-earned skills to the test! |
16-20 May 2011To get more qualitative information about what young people believe is important in Kingston, there will be small focus group sessions in local youth clubs and different services dealing with young people.
23-27 May 2011What have we found out?The group will meet once more to look at the results of their consultation and discuss the findings and what they think should happen next. Future lines of enquiry will be identified, which can be pursued in the event of any further consultation. |
JuneWe will look at the overall results of the consultation and write a summary report of what has been found, as well as young people’s recommendations as to what should happen next.
JulyThe results will be fed back to young people, Kingston Youth Council, the Children’s Trust and other stakeholders. Discussions will take place to see how the findings will translate into the upcoming Children and Young People’s Plan.
