Searchlight Mural Project
It was a normal Wednesday evening down at the Searchlight Youth Club. The Seniors were bouncing around ideas to improve the appearance of the centre. The outside of the club was starting to look a bit dull and boring! So, it was agreed that they wanted to get some kind of mural painted on the front of the building.
Some of the Young People have shown an interest in urban art, it was decided that the mural would be in a graffiti style displaying the name of the centre and some of the young people involved.
To begin with, the group had to work out how we could get some money to make this happen, a young man, Josef Dawod, took on the responsibility of being a lead young person on a YOF application. The application was successful and The Searchlight Seniors were granted £500!
Next step was to invite some professional urban artists down to lend a helping hand. They agreed and started to put the order for the paint together. Within a few weeks, the paint had arrived and a weekend was put aside for the project to take place.
Francis Taylor and Gary Weston (Youth Workers for The Searchlight) advertised the event on their Facebook pages. The project was due to start on the Saturday but unfortunately the weather was against us and the day was cancelled. Now the young people and the artists had a challenge on their hands, two days work was to be completed in one. Sunday arrived and the work begun.
9 hours later, the mural was complete and The Searchlight had a new appearance. Young people who use the centre throughout the week have all been enjoying the new look and they are now thinking about further ideas to improve the centre.
