PAYP Plus

Sacred Sound Records

Music and animation project 2009

Throughout the year, a talented group of young people who go by the name of ‘Sacred Sound Records’ have been very busy. It all started on the PAYP Plus programme running out of Barnfield Youth Centre on Thursday afternoons. David O’ Connell (Phobea), Chris Sexton (V.Dizzle), Scott Wheeler (Stitch), Dwayne Roberts (Finder) and Jake Johnson (Faults) were regular attendees on the project which was under the supervision of Francis Taylor (Youth Worker) and Marios Pantelli (Tutor, producer and director of Phobea’s Wishing On a Star track).

Over the weeks, the group worked hard in the studios at Barnfield and produced a hip hop track with video called ‘Hindsight’. It is a positive track about a person’s life and the journey they took. They made some mistakes and ended up in trouble but the song is all about reflecting on those mistakes and portraying a message so others may learn from it.

Once the video was complete, the next task on the agenda for ‘Sacred Sound Records’ was to promote the track and to perform it in front of a live audience. The video is due to be sent in to Channel AKA (formerly known as Channel U) to see if they will accept it to be broadcasted on national television, this is ongoing.

With regard to performing the track, the lads made an arrangement with the organiser of ‘Barnfest’ (A festival in Farnham) to perform a 45 minute set to open the event. This was also the debut for the latest member of ‘Sacred Sound Records’ – Jesse Hall (Chronic Kid) who performed his new track ‘Summer Time’ featuring Phobea. The event was a success and the lads impressed the audience with their lyrics and performance. Well done to all those involved!

Spinning off from the PAYP Plus project, there are lots of other positive outcomes that derived from it all. Chris Sexton worked on his English and Maths with Francis Taylor (who was a part time E2E tutor at the time) and gained the grades he needed to be accepted into Kingston College to study towards a first diploma in music technology. David O’ Connell is now in his second year at Kingston College, also studying music technology, and he played a key role in the setting up of the Searchlight Recording Studio. Scott Wheeler remains in education and is also volunteering at Dickerage Adventure playground. All of the young people involved in this project worked so hard and have made the youth workers proud!
