YOF: Malden Manor Kickz

Floodlights installed at Malden Manor Kickz

What was the situation?

The Kickz programme started in Malden Manor in April 2008, this was a start to providing positive activities for the young people in the area who were being anti-social. The programme ran through the summer but because it was going to get dark early during the winter the project was going have to stop. The young people would then be left with nothing to do again.

How did YOF help?

The idea was for the young people, youth worker and Kickz workers to work with the school to raise the funds to be able to get some floodlights. The young people worked with the youth worker to complete a YOF application and gain the funding to help put floodlights up so that the project could continue to run during the winter months. The floodlights were put up during the summer and the football has continued to run.

The young people attending the project, which has been regularly about 10 males, have been able to do positive things during the evenings. It means that the project did not lose its continuity and other community groups can use the venue on other nights.

The young people have continued to build positive relationships with the workers, played in tournaments, have gone on a trip to see a professional football match as a group, and had regular exercise.
