Axé Capoeira
Want to learn the true art of Capoeira?
Capoeira is a Brazilian Martial Art created by the slaves in Brazil to fight for their freedom. Today Capoeira is practiced in over 150 countries around the word. Axé Capoeira is (one of the) the largest Capoeira organisations in the world, present in over 20 countries!
Axé (pronounced ash e) Capoeira UK was created in London in July 2006 by Estagiário Marcus Cabeça. Our classes promote healthy living and teach students creative expression, self discipline and an appreciation of the multicultural society we live in.
By teaching this philosophy we aim to engage with the community, celebrate cultural diversity and share how the different aspects inherent to Capoeira such as music and physical expression can help to achieve this.
Our members believe that in learning Capoeira, individuals will:
- build their confidence
- improve coordination
- learn mutual respect
Axé Capoeira UK is very active in the community and is fully supported by the Active Team at Kingston upon Thames Borough Council for the projects put forward and organised. We also lucky receive support from the community, particularly through local businesses and organisations.
Inspiring us… Estagiário Marcus Cabeça
Classes are lead by Marcus Cabeça - Kingston University's Coach of the Year (2011) and winner of the Eileen Gray Trophy (2010) for being an inspirational leader and motivating trainees to reach their full potential! Training sessions for young people as well as adult beginners and intermediates provide a full-body workout that improves flexibility, co-ordination and balance as well as providing opportunities for self development. Capoeira can transform you and bring you the freedom of a healthy body and mind!
“Marcus Cabeça has a rare quality which combines a serious attitude towards his work and the importance of including the wider community in that work alongside a sense of fun and playfulness.
Unlike other leaders in sport, he is very talented at quickly understanding the differences between individuals that he teaches; what their personal challenges and situations are and then works from that base, knowing how best they can make more of the unique strengths that they possess.
I feel very privileged to be part of Axé Capoeira”

Benefits
Capoeira is a combination of different activities including dance, martial arts, music and acrobatics that is played inside a “roda” (circle) that symbolises the world. Inside that circle there are no barriers, no dominant language, race, or social class - everything is equal.
Capoeira in general provides a number of benefits:
- health benefits from increased physical activity (flexibility, improved coordination, stamina)
- self-development
- building blocks and ethos necessary to become well rounded, tolerant, compassionate, and open-minded individuals.
Aspirations and projects
Our objectives and priorities are to:
- unite people from all ages, backgrounds, ethnicities and abilities
- inspire young people to be more healthy and positive
- increase the number of members of Axe Capoeira UK
- increase awareness about Afro Brazilian culture in general and Capoeira in particular
- get people to be more active through an original and fun activity
To achieve these objectives we have been running projects, particularly targeting young people, ethnic minorities and women with the key focus always about bringing people together and inspiring them to become more active and healthy.
