Capoeira

Capoeira is a diverse combination of game, martial arts, music, dance and acrobatics that was created by the African slaves in Brazil sometime after the sixteenth century.
When playing Capoeira, participants form a circle (roda) and take turns playing traditional African instruments such as the Bermibau, singing, or sparring in pairs in the centre of the circle. Capoeirista’s believe that the roda - the place where Capoeira is played, symbolises the world and that when inside that circle everything is equal - all you have is your body, mind and soul!
It is the epitome of a vibrant Brazilian culture which is rapidly becoming the fitness trend of the 21st Century around the world and especially here in the UK. This unique art is now a part of mainstream pop and movie culture with Capoeira appearing in movies such as ‘Harry Potter’, ‘Blade’, ‘Ocean’s 12’, ‘Mission Impossible 2’, and ‘Cat Woman’, to name but a few. Capoeira also appears regularly in MTV pop videos and PlayStation games.
