UKYP at the House of Commons

For just the third time in history, 325 Members of Youth Parliament (MYP) from around the UKwill be representing young people at the House of Commons on Friday 4th November 2011, Kingston's MYP Rhammel Afflick will be amongst them pushing the views of the young people of Kingston. This is a unique opportunity as the UK Youth Parliament is the only organisation other than MP's to be allowed into the House of Commons to debate.
The 5 topics that will be debated came aboutwhen MYP's managed togather the views of over 65,000 young people through the 'Make Your Mark' Campaign, giving them the chance to decide what they thought were the most important issues to young people in the UK. The five topics to be debated include: Provision of public transport for young people, a graduate tax analternative to tuition fees, zero tolerance towards bullying in schools, end child poverty and making Britain a greener place. Most of these issues are issues that the young people of Kingston are passionate about which is great news.
Interesting Facts:
- The UK Youth Parliament will now be able to debate in the House of Commons for as long as it exists this is after a vote casted byBritish MPs in 2010 which supported the sitting.
- John Bercow, Speaker of the House of Commons will chair proceedings just like anormal day in the chambers with MPs.
- The UK Youth Parliaments Sitting is part of Parliament Week, a national initiative that aims to build greater awareness and engagement with parliamentary democracy in the UK.
