KYC Manifesto
What is a youth manifesto?
KYC is your representative for youth issues in the Royal Borough Kingston upon Thames. In discussion with various groups of young people from local schools and youth clubs, KYC has produced a list of important issues that matter to the young people who live and/or go to school and socialise in the borough. This manifesto is a guide that sets out the action plan and campaigns for KYC during 2010-2011.
Background
The manifesto has been developed through a consultation process involving several school forums, and with other groups of young people. The consultations took place at:
- KYC annual meeting
- A youth crime event held at the Rose Theatre
- Four school student forums
- Focus groups through KYC
- Reviewing what young people have said in various consultations at neighbourhood level
The manifesto is broken down in to five broad areas that young people highlighted as important:
- Bridge the Gap - Crime, Safety and Young People and Adults: Young people do not know their stop and search rights and the names of their local police officers/PCSOs. The relationship between young people and the local police needs to be improved.
- Travel and Transport: More effective buses at school times, including a school bus route and extra K1 services in Malden Manor.
- Better Communications with Councillors: Young people do not know the roles or names of their local councillors.
- Anti-Bullying: More awareness of where young people can go for help and information on bullying and ChildLine.
- Building on Better Communities: Young people would like regular updates on the development of the Olympic site.
Issues of disabled access will also be fed into the above issues to improve access for young people with disabilities.
