KYC at Kingston Carnival
Review by Mayank Sharma
As promised, Kingston Carnival 2009 was more colourful and spectacular than ever, and yes, Kingston was filled with an explosion of energy and enthusiasm!
Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Ian McDonald, opened the event and joined the Chinese dancers. It was like a small version of Notting Hill Carnival in Kingston with world Music, street dance, colourful costumes, food and happy faces everywhere.
At 12:00 noon visitors lined up to watch the procession, which started in Clarence Street, then headed to Guildhall and Market Place for an afternoon of world music, food and street performers.
The food was just amazing at the carnival. At sometimes, it looked more like a big food festival with jerk chicken, curried goat, rice and peas and fresh coconut juice which excited everyone.
Groovy tunes and music on the stage made everyone move their body. African drumming, Bollywood dancing, a steel band, Chinese dancing and even a Michael Jackson tribute set the stage on fire. The best part about this year's carnival was that most of the performers were young people from Kingston and it was well organised by Kingston Race and Equalities Council and young people from Global Arts.
