Did you know you can get contraception that is long-lasting, effective, reliable, easily reversed and that you don't have to remember to take every day?

Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) methods can be a really good choice, especially if you do not think you will want to be pregnant for a few years. All long-lasting methods are suitable for women of all ages including teenagers.

Use in conjunction with condoms

These methods provide protection against pregnancy only. For protection against sexually transmitted infections as well, always use condoms to protect against infections such as HIV and Chlamydia.

Long Acting Reversible Contraception Methods

All of these methods can be over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. Once in place, you don't need to think about them until they need replacing. They are more effective than any other form of contraception at preventing pregnancy and none of them interrupt sex. Ask your doctor or nurse for more information.

   
Long acting reversible contraception injection  

Contraceptive Injection

This method is an injection, usually in your bottom, that contains a hormone called progestogen. Advantages are that it lasts up to 12 weeks and may help with heavy periods. Potential drawbacks include the possibility of unpredictable spotting and bleeding; fertility may take some time to return agter stopping use; and once injected, it cannot be removed from the body.

Implant

A small flexible rod is inserted under the skin of the upper arm, which slowly releases progestogen. Advantages are that it lasts up to 3 years, but can be removed earlier. Fertility returns immediately after stopping use. Potential drawbacks are that about 40% of users experience irregular bleeding. It also must be put in and taken out by a doctor or nurse.  
Long acting reversible contraception IUS  

Intrauterine System (IUS)

This is a small plastic device, placed in the uterus, which slowly releases progestogen. Advantages are It lasts up to 5 years, but can be removed earlier. Periods usually become lighter, shorter and less painful. Fertility returns immediately after stopping use. Potential drawbacks are that irregular spotting or bleeding is common at first. It must be put in and taken out by a doctor or nurse.

Intrauterine Device (IUD)

An IUD is a small copper and plastic device placed in the uterus. Advantages are that it can last up to 10 years. It works as soon as it's put in. Fertility returns immediately after stopping use. Potential drawbacks are that periods can last longer or be heavier or more painful. It must be put in and taken out by a doctor or nurse.
