16 to 19 Bursary
What is the 16 to 19 bursary?
If you’re aged between 16 and 19 years and think you might struggle with the costs for full-time education or training you may receive a bursary.
Students most in need will be eligible to receive a bursary of £1,200 a year. This group includes:
- young people in care
- care leavers
- people claiming income support
- disabled young people who receive Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance
How do I apply?
You will need to apply directly to your school or college once you have been given a conditional place and have been through the registration process.
For advice, speak to the student support or welfare services at your school who will be able to direct you.
How will I receive the money?
Schools and Colleges will distribute the money and will have the freedom to decide the frequency and scale of each payment. You will need to contact your school or college to find out how they will be distributing your payment.
Receipt of the bursary may be conditional on meeting the standards set out by your particular education provider e.g. behaviour or attendance.
What evidence will I have to provide?
This will depend on your school or college but you will need a letter of support from your social worker to show that you are a care leaver or a young person in care. You may also need your bank details for colleges who will transfer the money directly to your account.
What can the money be spent on?
- Meals whilst attending your course
- Books and equipment
- Other course related costs
- Some education providers may use part of the bursary for course materials and therefore pay “in kind” e.g. a bulk purchase or to obtain specialist course equipment.
Is there other funding available?
As a care leaver / young person in care you are entitled to the full £1200 per year bursary. However, the school / college you attend may have additional funds to assist you on top of the bursary. Speak to the student support/welfare service at your school / college to find out more.
