Your Planet

Hands up encircling the sun

Our planet is changing. Human activity is changing the environment in which we live causing climate change, loss of biodiveristy and putting an unsustainable burden on resources. If this trend continues, then our planet will increasingly become an unpleasant place to be.

You can make a difference by learning more about the environment and ways in which we can protect it.

Reduce

One of the key concepts in protecting the environment is reducing the amount of energy and resources we consume and reducing the amount of pollution and waste we produce.

Re-use

A good way to reduce the amount of waste we produce is to re-use things that are still useful. For example, take a re-useable bag around with you when you go out shopping and you can use that instead of disposable plastic bags.

Recycle

A lot of waste materials can be reprocessed into new materials and this is known as recycling. The benefits of recycling mean that there is less need to obtain raw materials, which can also save energy. Putting an old aluminium drink can in a recycling bin instead of a waste bin means that the aluminium will be recycled into something else (like another can) instead of being thrown away.

Renewable

Resources such as fossil fuels are limited in supply, and so the continued use of them is unsustainable (they won't last forever). The future will be focusing on sustainable development, using renewable resources like solar energy, wind power, tidal power and sustainable crops.
