Being Police Cadets

Police Cadets hanging out

What is it like being a police cadet? Here are some perspectives from Kingston's volunteer police cadets...

I have been involved with Kingston police cadets for over 4 years. I plan to become a police officer in the future so being involved in the Cadets has given me a broad insight to the diverse duties of the Metropolitan Police. Over the years my confidence has grown and now I am one of the team leaders.

We get to go places and do things other young people just wouldn’t have the opportunity, for example we went to Heathrow airport and role played as passengers on a plane for a hi jack scenario, this involved armed police officers acting out a rescue mission. It was really exciting as we even got the chance to slide down the plane’s inflatable emergency chutes. The skills I have developed over the years with the cadets are for life.

With over 40 attending every Wednesday evening, you may think it’s mostly boys but the group is pretty equal in boys and girls. Even though it is a serious commitment and you have to be orderly and disciplined it is also lots of fun. This evening we had 2 officer safety instructors Jayne and Andy who taught us how to defend overselves against an attacker using the same techniques as the police. We have many police specialised teams visit our Wednesday evenings from police dogs to the Royal Protection Team.

As a police cadet we get to go to many places and it’s not all police related. Recently we had a tour of 10 Downing Street, the home of the Prime Minister, and in a few weeks time we will be visiting the Police training centre to see how traffic police are trained in their patrol cars. I have made lots of friends since joining the Cadets and everyone is really nice.

The highlight of my year was our annual adventure week to North Wales. As you can see from the photos (below) we packed alot in that week. It was knackering but lots of fun. Recently we came 2nd in a Drill competition against 24 other cadets’ teams.
