Police Cadets

Metropolitan Police Volunteer Police Cadets (VPC) is open to young people aged 14 to 21 years. Cadets are drawn from all parts of society including referrals from Child Protection and Youth Offending Teams.

There are approximately 900 Volunteer Cadets in the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and about 200 Cadet Staff. In the cadets you get to work with police officers, police staff, police community support officers, special constables and volunteers.

The Cadets often help with local policing objectives. This is particularly so in relation to Safer Neighbourhood initiatives. Whilst they are not allowed to patrol with police officers the Cadets can perform tasks such as crime prevention initiatives, message/leaflet delivery, test purchase of alcohol, fireworks and knives and involvement in non-confrontational local events.

Cadets also get involved in MPS wide deployments such as Trooping the Colour, Remembrance Day Parades, London Triathlon and various Conferences and Charity Events. All Cadet activities are Risk Assessed to comply with Health & Safety and Child Protection policies and procedures.

Cadet Units meet once a week in their local area. Meetings usually include drill/inspection, some sort of physical activity, a guest speaker or input on a police related topic as part of an ongoing training programme. Cadet Units involve themselves in other activities at weekends and in school holidays and this may include going away on camps. Various Cadet Competitions are also held during the year, which test the skills developed within the VPC Units.

Aims of the Metropolitan Police Volunteer Police Cadets.

• Teach good citizenship.
• To enable young people to develop personal qualities and skills through a structured programme.
• Enhance the relationship between the police and the public.
• Create a uniformed group of young men and women who have a suitable level of fitness.
• To assist the Metropolitan Police Service in non confrontational tasks and to be involved in community activities.
• To stimulate and maintain the interest of suitable young people who may be considering the police service as a career.
