MYP Checklist and Job Description
What is an MYP?
MYP stands for Member of Youth Parliament. As you may or may not know there is a UK Youth Parliament just like the National Parliament. The UK Youth Parliament is made up of MYP’s from each borough in the country.
An MYP is selected annually by the young people within the borough. The main role of an MYP is to make sure that they represent the views of the young people within their borough. These views are then passed on to the national MP’s and local councillors so that changes can be made within your area.
The current MYP for 2008 is:

Main Responsibilities / Duties of Job
- To chair the Kingston Youth Council.
- All work to be undertaken within the context of the Member of Youth Parliament and Kingston Youth Council (KYC)
- Encourage young people to speak out and work together co-operatively.
- Show that you have a commitment to promoting the voice of young people.
- Encourage and support young people to make and take decisions.
- Encourage and support young people to develop their own identity.
- Take part in the planning, delivery and evaluation of the MYP programme.
- Work directly with young people in groups and on an individual basis.
- Work with MYP UK.
- Attend meetings; approximately 12 a year (See yearly break down for more info).
- Update your record of achievement.

- Be willing to undertake relevant training.
Person Specification – Do you have the following…
- Ability to reflect on own experience as a young person and awareness of what issues impacts on young people today.
- Appreciation of the importance of:
- Young people working together co-operatively.
- Youth Parliament UK.
- Equal Opportunities.
- Young people being encouraged to make and take decisions.
- Young people having a voice.
- Young people developing their own identity.
- Experience of, or the ability to, work with young people in groups and on an individual basis.
- Experience or understanding of the importance of working as part of a team.
- Willingness to meet young people in a variety of settings.
Check List
Duration: the post of MYP lasts for 1 year.
Money: You get none for being an MYP, but you will get some expenses paid for.
Involves:
- Meeting other young people.
- Representing the views of the young people in Kingston.
- Raising issues locally and nationally.
- Meeting MPs.
- Making sure that young people have a voice.
If elected, you will need to:
- Attend the launch event at the House of Commons
- Be committed to at least 12 meetings over the next year
- Update your record of achievement
- Chairing Kingston Youth Council
You have to:
- Be under 19.
- Live or be in full time education in the Royal Borough of Kingston.
