Kingston Summer Uni Showcase 2009

After the big success of Summer Uni 2008, the Royal Borough of Kingston once more aimed to provide a broad range of free courses and activities for young people aged between 11 and 25. Activities ran throughout the summer, enabling young people to gain accreditations and experiences which can’t be gained at school or college.

Summary

Compared to last year, this year’s Summer Uni offered a much better and bigger programme, and, as all of these courses were free, many young people took advantage of this and got involved in a variety of different courses, such as CV writing, drama, football and film making- even writing and performing a stage musical! The Stage Pro Musical Theatre course was one of the highlights from the Summer Uni; a group of young people aged between 11 and 13 gave a tribute to the late Michael Jackson by performing and dancing to some of his best songs at both the Kingston Carnival and the Summer Uni Celebration event at the Rose Theatre.

In the Carnival Arts and Film Making courses, young people got a chance to explore themselves in different fields like banner and costume making, as well as producing their own DVD. Another highlight of this year's Summer Uni was that it was more organised by young people which made Summer Uni look much more special and unique from other activities on offer.

Showcase

At the end of the Summer Uni 2009 a special event took place. On August 28, at the Rose Theatre in Kingston, a performance was held to showcase the new skills and talents of all the students, and was attended by the Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Ian McDonald. The event was planned by Elaine Coulon (Professional Assistant to Head of Youth service and Summer Uni co-ordinator) and was hosted and organised by Mayank Sharma, Rhammel Afflick, Derek Eboigbe.

The showcase also featured African dance and drumming by Global Arts, an improvised presentation by young people from the Get up Get Out get Active! course, and a carnival dance performance which set the stage on fire. The young people also got another chance to show off their talent to an even wider audience at Kingston Carnival where once again they set the stage on fire and made everyone dance to Michael Jackson songs and African drumming.

Get ready for next year

We promised last year that the Summer Uni would be much bigger and better in 2009 and yes it was! Some young people didn’t get chance to get involved in some courses as all places were gone, but to avoid disappointment next year visit this site in June and book your place in advance.
