The Prince's Trust
About The Prince's Trust
The Prince’s Trust Kingston Team was set up in 1999 and has been going from strength to strength ever since. They are run through delivery partner South Thames College who also run 7 other team bases in and around South London.
For many unemployed young people aged 16-25, looking for a fun and practical way to improve on their life skills, this is an ideal course for them. It offers a unique opportunity for individuals who may be lacking in confidence, motivation and communication skills to push themselves with the support of their fellow team members and their team leaders.
If you want to make want to make a real change in your life and struggle to motivate yourself, we will support you in every step.
The 12 week programme
You are encouraged to challenge yourself and come out of your comfort zones on the residential week 2 which takes place at The Foundry Mountain, Derbyshire. As well as bonding with people that you have only just met; cooking for each other, living together (the big brother experience), you will also take part in some amazing activities such as abseiling, rock climbing, caving and orienteering while supporting your other teammates to get over any fears they may have. This memorable experience is one of the main highlights over the 12 weeks as it is a point where the team members go from being individuals to a real team.
You continue on your journey by getting involved in improving your local community in week 3 and taking on a community project that your team have picked out for themselves, fundraised for and completed in the following weeks 4 and 5 of the course:
- e.g. the Kingston Team 31 created a sensory garden for Worcester Park Primary School. They worked through all that the weather could throw at them, completing on a high with the sun shining and the local newspaper snapping them up to highlight their smashing great work! Check out this press release from the Surrey Comet!
During weeks 6-8 the aim is to get a taste of what it's really like working in a job of your choice. The course is all about arming you with all the skills and confidence that you will need to go out into the big bad world and actively search for work. We will help with CV writing and covering letters, mock interviews and we offer constant support over the 12 weeks and beyond in putting opportunities your way:
- e.g. Aaron Vine who was a member on the Kingston Team 30. He started off as a very shy lad who lacked in confidence but by the end of the course despite all his personal challenges, he was not only able to complete the 12 week programme, but through guidance and encouragement from his team leader, he got to go for an experience of a lifetime volunteering in Kenya for 10 weeks through PLATFORM 2 (currently not available).
In week 9 your team will begin to think about their next steps. We help you to research and apply for job opportunities or courses that you are interested in doing. We have some expert advice from workers in the industry such as Goldman Sachs and RBS set up by The Prince’s Trust.
In weeks 10 and 11 your team get to do even more amazing things for the local community in what's callled the TEAM CHALLENGE! The team must choose an aided organisation that is seen as vulnerable or needy and treat them to four days of fun!
Week 12 is a brilliant opportunity for your team to show off to friends and family all the amazing adventures that you have been on with the final presentation. They are awarded with a City and Guilds certificate in "Personal Development and Contributing to the Community" and the occasion is celebrated with great food and soft drinks with plenty of tales of great times over the course.
