Jobs and Work Experience

Work Experience

Sometimes in Year 10 or 11 you may have the opportunity to have a work experience placement. This will allow you to experience first hand what the world of work is like. Work experience placements are normally organised by a member of staff in your school, however, you may be interested in gaining work experience during school holidays.

If there's somewhere you'd be interested in getting a work experience placement at, write them a letter of application. Connexions can help you with this.

Job Search

If you are looking for a job you can browse through the careers information and advice on the My Choice website (link below). Take a look at the Choice Jobs section to search for job or apprenticeship opportunities.

Connexions Kingston also provides a retail list for Kingston stores for those seeking part time or full time retail work, and they can help you with your application.

Apprenticeships

Royal Mail Apprenticeships
Lasting nine months, and giving young people the opportunity to gain a level 2 NVQ, these paid apprenticeships offer both classroom based and on-the-job training. No specific qualifications are needed, just lots of enthusiasm, a passion for hard work and an ability to work individually as well as in a team. Apprentices can expect to learn about all aspects of the mail industry and are offered a permanent job upon successful completion of the scheme. For more info and to apply online see the website (link at the bottom of the page).

RBK Apprenticeships
Royal Borough of Kingston Council (RBK) is pleased to announce that we have just started our next recruitment campaign to attract more young people into the organisation through the apprenticeship route. RBK apprenticeships are open to all young people over the age of 16. Click here for more details.

Retail Jobs

Jobs in retail (working in a shop) can be a good first step into the world of work. Jobs which offer part-time contracts can offer you the opportunity to continue in education and earn money. Seasonal jobs also appear throughout the year which you might be interested in (especially around Summer time and Christmas).

You'll probably notice job adverts in store windows or online at a retailer's website. They may ask you to apply online or apply within store by picking up an application form or dropping off a CV.
